The Jail Division manages all facets of housing inmates within the Sheriff’s Office. They are charged with having the knowledge, skills and abilities in key elements in managing inmate behavior in all types of confinement. These key elements include assessing inmates’ risks and needs, assigning inmates to housing, meeting inmates’ basic needs, setting and conveying behavioral expectations, supervising inmates, and keeping inmates productively occupied while maintaining detailed records. The division is also charged with providing professional development training and education to the office in efforts to enhance the profession.
DUTY SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with General Orders, a Jailer is a non-commissioned or commissioned position that processes inmates when they first arrive at the Adult Detention Center (ADC), correctly identifying each arrestee/inmate, creating arrestee/inmate records with essential information, performing security procedures, and issuing them uniform and other linens as appropriate. In addition, jailers conduct activities related to arrestee/inmate release, ensuring that forms are filled out correctly and that arrestees/inmates receive items they surrendered during intake. Their responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following;
Assess the physical and mental status of arrestees who are brought into the ADC and make a determination to accept or deny custody.
Obtain legal documentation from the arresting officers for authority to house the arrestee.
Perform a clothed search of arrestees in the pre-booking area and remove restraints.
Provide arrestees with appropriate phone calls.
Inventory inmate’s property, clothing, and/or money.
Photograph and fingerprint incoming arrestees.
Evaluate arrestee for release criteria and make a determination (i.e. personal recognizance, security release, etc.).
Obtain bail and release arrestees/inmates on security release.
Classify inmates and assign proper housing.
Search, shower and issue facility clothing, bedding, and supplies to new inmates.
Assist with the release of inmates by verifying identity, returning property, and dressing out into civilian clothing.
Assist the transport deputy with moving and processing inmates into and out of ADC.
Run warrant checks and/or criminal history records of arrestees, inmates or others as required.
Assist with other corrections duties as needed.
Conduct frequent and irregular inmate counts and checks.
Escort inmates individually or in groups to and from locations within the facility.
Apply appropriate restraints and escort inmates individually or in groups to and from locations outside the facility (i.e. to court, to other facilities, hospitals, dentists, etc.).
Respond to, and/or initiate emergency procedures when needed.
Conduct sanitation and security checks of inmate housing areas and other general facility areas.
Patrol areas within the facility.
Perform outside perimeter checks.
Supervise inmates and inmate workers working in or around facility areas.
Perform pat-down searches and unclothed searches as necessary.
Conduct searches of inmate housing areas and general areas.
Investigate disturbances or suspicious activities.
Coordinate and/or direct the work of non-commissioned personnel (i.e. volunteers) in the day-to-day operation of the facility.
Maintain secure control and accountability of all in use duty keys, security keys and radio equipment.
Ensure inmates follow all rules and regulations of the facility.
Respond to the medical needs of inmates as required and authorized.
Perform other duties as instructed by the supervisor.
Write incident reports.
Write misconduct reports for disciplinary issues.
Communicate written and/or verbal information to supervisors, corrections staff and inmates.
Process paperwork as needed for the operation of the control center.
Record information in the facility logs as necessary.
Answer questions from inmates and/or visitors.
Answer telephone calls as needed.
Communicate with inmates via the intercom or in person.
Run warrant checks and/or criminal history records of arrestees, inmate or others as required.
Operate the Control Center.
Provide good customer service to the public.
